“Are Women’s Rights in Islam Compatible with Modern Society?” – Event held at University of Warwick

The International Organisation to Preserve Human Rights (IOPHR) organised an event titled “Are Women’s Rights in Islam Compatible with Modern Society?” in association with the Warwick Conservatives, held at the University of Warwick. Speakers at the event included MEP Anthea McIntyre, part of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group representing the West-Midlands at the European Parliament since 2011, Dr. Seyed M. Azmayesh, a Jurist-Scholar and Quran Expert with over 40 years of experience in the field, and Ms. Mattie Heaven, Women’s Rights Activist and Senior Policy & Advocacy Advisor for IOPHR.

The event took an academic and legal approach to the topic of Women’s Rights in Islam and its compatibility with what can be defined as ‘Modern Society’. The discussion focused on eliminating several misconceptions and misinterpretations about Islam in terms of Women’s Rights and Gender Equality. The event highlighted how education and awareness can provide a stable and long-term solution to counter gender-based violence against women and girls, which is being practiced and perpetuated under a false Islamic pretext, and also tackle issues such as hate crime within our society. The speakers stressed on the need for continued open dialogue on these issues, with education and awareness being the means to true empowerment for each individual.
